I was born in 2006. The year this was built, that birth year was turning 20 — tens of millions of people leaving their teenage years one birthday at a time, while another birth year began theirs. Seeing that transition country by country makes it feel both smaller and bigger than expected.
It also shows things you don’t see in an overall population count. More than one in four of the world’s teenagers live in Africa, against roughly one in five people overall. Nigeria alone has more teenagers than the United States. India has almost one in five of all of them.
This is a demographic model, not a census or a record of anyone’s birthday. It combines country population estimates with sourced timing distributions so the changes are legible without claiming to count any one person.
